Contextual Fit
Architectural Design II- ARC 257

Additinal information
Designed by Richard Meier
The Smith House was planned to start in 1965 and completed in 1967 in Darien, Connecticut, and overlooks the Long Island Sound from the Connecticut coast.
Project Outline
In this project our goal was to add an addition to The Smith House in accordance to a narrative and impose both a new hierarchical space but a meta idea in alliance to the narrative.

Narrative
The Dalucus family, the proud new owners of the historic smith house, has been a proud player of games for generations. Chess, Rubix cube, Checkers, even competitive games such as connect 4.
The whole family is connected by games and other intelligence or creativity-based toys such as Legos. They would like a home where they can connect over their shared interests while also enjoying the view of the waterside.
Hierarchy Space
Family room (game room), open view of the water side property. [300 square feet]
Master Bedroom [200 square feet]
Master Bathroom [80 square feet]
Exercise Room [180 square feet]
Outdoor Deck [300 square feet]
Meta Idea:
Rubix Cube, two different designs used in the barring walls the building.

Two Rubix cube designs used in the barring walls of the building. The left as windows in the exercise room, the right as cutouts in the freestanding bearing wall. This allows for an unintrusive addition to the design without sacrificing the functionality or feasibility of the addition.
